JOB DESCRIPTION 

POST TITLE :   Distance Learning Tutor (Safe Handling of Medicines and Mental Health)

SALARY SCALE :  Up to Point 23 on the College Payscale

DATE :  November 2011

GENERIC PURPOSE OF POST

To provide high-quality efficient and effective non-teaching support, assisting with the promotion of opportunities for learning thereby enabling all learners to achieve to the best of their ability. All staff are expected to support the College’s commitment to safeguarding and child protection.

JOB ROLE PURPOSE OF POST

1. Within a quality assured framework, assist in the provision of high quality learning opportunities for distance learning students, enabling all participants to achieve to the best of their ability. 

2. To support, mentor and coach students working on distance learning materials and schemes of work. Providing initial advice and guidance as part of induction and thereafter facilitating and ensuring student progress to include undertaking assessment(s).

College Responsibilities 

In addition to the generic responsibilities referred to above, all colleagues employed directly in support of assisting with the provision of the teaching and learning experiences of students at Stratford upon Avon College are expected to undertake the following College related responsibilities.

 Professional/Technical/Procedural Knowledge

The job requires theoretical, practical and procedural knowledge at a technical level across the specialist area of mentoring and coaching students working on distance learning materials and schemes of work

The job involves carrying out a wide variety of complex tasks or duties under limited supervision.

The job involves working within broad practice guidelines, using discretion and initiative over a defined range of activities with periods of infrequent or limited access to a line manager. The job is subject to overall managerial direction.

The job involves moderate direct responsibility for the supervision, direction and co-ordination of other employees. The job involves the allocation of work to a small group or team, the checking of work and the day to day direction of staff. The work involves advising instructing and checking work out-put and providing on-the-job training.

The job requires high level general awareness and involves prolonged periods of intense concentration, involving high-level sensory/mental attention over a range of different activities. The job involves frequent periods of high level work-related pressures e.g. working to deadlines, interruptions, and conflicting demands.

 Working Environment

The job involves minimal exposure to disagreeable, unpleasant or hazardous environmental working conditions.

HOURS OF WORK

The postholder will work such hours as are appropriate to each student’s programme of learning as identified on the Qualification and Delivery Grid. The caseload of each postholder should not exceed 37 hours of work per week.

CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU

From time to time you may be required to undertake duties that involve unrestricted contact with children or vulnerable adults, therefore the offer of employment is subject to a satisfactory Standard/Enhanced Disclosure statement from the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB). A copy of the CRB’s Code of Practice is available on request.

NOTE:

The following specific Job Role Duties are current as at the date shown above. These duties will be reviewed, normally annually, and, in consultation with the postholder. The College reserves the right to make such changes as deemed necessary and appropriate in support of effective and efficient operational requirements.

 

  1. Provide initial advice and guidance to learners as part of the interview process and thereafter ensure that all learners receive an induction appropriate to their learning programme
  2. Within the guidance framework of the relevant Awarding Body, implement an agreed training programme with each learner maintaining close liaison and providing ongoing and effective support. 
  3. Undertake regular reviews of progress with learners and if appropriate, agree and implement negotiated changes.
  4. Support learners to progress onto further qualifications.
  5. Undertake administrative duties as required to include maintaining learner records and ensuring the proper and accurate completion of all College related documentation.
  6. Attend all meetings and staff development events proactively engaging on a programme of personal and/or professional self- development.
  7. Demonstrate commitment to equal opportunities and anti-discrimination ensuring all aspects of the College’s equality, diversity and inclusivity policies and procedures are adhered to.
  8. To work on own initiative and prepare relevant paperwork for students.
  9. Discuss caseloads and progress on a monthly basis with Team leader.

Qualifications / Experience

Qualifications

Appropriate specialist/professional qualification(s)    Essential

e.g. Degree or equivalent

(N.B. Qualifications will normally be held at the minimum level of NVQ 4/5 although in exceptional circumstances relevant experience will be taken into consideration)

Good standard of general education to GCSE Level (or equivalent) at Grade C or above in English and Maths    Essential

High level computer literacy skills e.g. ECDL or equivalent     Essential

(Qualifications will normally be held at the above level although in exceptional circumstances proven experience in the use of software packages may be taken into consideration)

3.    Appointments
