Music Students Celebrate Independent's Day

In celebration of the influence of ‘independent record labels’ on popular music, students from Stratford-upon-Avon College are putting on a live performance of popular songs from previous decades.

On Thursday 13th and Friday 14th January, five bands will present sets ofsongs by artists such as Nirvana, Sam and Dave and the Pogues.

Independent record labels are notorious for taking music in new directions and exploring new ideas. By promoting some of the most exciting and revolutionary artists they have been integral to the development of popular music over the years.

James Maiden, Programme Area Co-ordinator for Music at the College said, “It is fabulous to see young musicians grappling with some of the most influential and decadent music in history. Much of it is long before their time but, it’s not just about rebellion, some of Elvis’s songs from the Sun Records’ days are his most enduring and there are tons of great melodies and foot stomping rhythms on display.”

“The levels of musicianship for first year students are really something to behold as well and certainly worthy of public support.”

So, expect Elvis’s ‘That’s Alright (Mama)’ to rub shoulders with Tina Turner’s ‘River Deep Mountain High’ and the Sex Pistol’s ‘God Save The Queen’.

Performances take place at the Gordon Vallins Studio at Stratford-upon-Avon College on 13th and 14th January 2011 7:30pm. Tickets are priced at £5 (£3 concessions).

Come along to support and experience a piece of the musical extravaganza that is ‘Independent’s Day”.
