The BTEC Level 3 National Foundation/Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development is designed for post-16 learners who want to progress directly to employment in an assistant coaching role. The qualification is also suitable for those wishing to progress to higher education, where learners would have the added advantage of using it to obtain part-time employment while studying.
This is a career-focused qualification with industry endorsement and accreditation, which will enable you to develop underpinning knowledge, technical skills and to gain experience as an assistant coach through the combination of practical and theory lessons.
The course is endorsed by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), which has confirmed that the qualification is fully mapped to its professional standards of 'Assistant Coach' and 'Safeguarding and Protecting Children'. CIMSPA's endorsement of this qualification will allow you to apply for CIMSPA membership after successfully completing the programme, and is recognised by employers in the sports sector.
The completion of the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development is likely to attract UCAS Tariff points (pending application approval) and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to entry requirements for many related courses such as BA (Hons) in Sports Coaching and Development and BA (Hons) in Sports Management.

· Applied Coaching Skills.
· Research Project in Sport (Pearson-set)*.
4 Additional Units:
· Sports Psychology.
· Fitness Testing.
· Fitness Training.
· Rules, Regulations and Officiating in Sport.
This is a full-time taught course delivered through regular group lectures, practical lessons, and independent studies. The learning process will be directed by qualified lecturers in specific fields. Lecturers and assessors will design and implement a range of activities such as lessons, tutorials, online instruction, supervised studies and feedback on performance which will enhance the quality of the content delivered.
Year 1: Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development.
Year 2: Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development.
Assessments are designed and delivered in the context of realistic workplace situations. The majority of the course is assessed via coursework which may include:
· Case studies
· Practical assessments
· Written reports and essays
Each unit is assessed using Pass, Merit or Distinction levels, which are combined at the end of the qualification to give an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the qualification.
You will need to express your interest for the course via an online application. If successful, you will be invited to an information evening and interview with the specialist lecturers. Places are offered by interview and upon receipt of a successful reference and achieving the entry requirements.
4 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above or equivalent including English Language and Maths.
You will need to purchase the Stratford-upon-Avon College Sports Uniform (£141 for the bundle). Financial support is available to students who may need help with funding.
You may be invited to attend trips to a variety of places across the UK and overseas to support your education and experience. These are only offered to students as a reward for continued hard work and excellent attendance. Students are asked to pay for these trips individually.
In addition to completing your qualification, you will also be developing employability skills that are valued and recognised by employers. As part of the study programme you must complete a work experience placement each year. Careers advice and guidance on applying to university will be on offer to you throughout the year, helping guide you towards your next step. Advice will also be given to students during tutorials regarding extra qualifications and voluntary experiences that are on offer outside of college to increase employability skills.
Independent study/research is a vital part of further education and your timetable will provide you with free time to enable you to engage fully with this essential part of the course and to complete assignments.
