Where will this course lead?

If you want to work within the field of electrical installation as a domestic installer, this full-time course is designed to give you an introduction to electrical installation theory as well as the opportunity to develop your practical skills.

It is suitable for school leavers or people who are unemployed and wish to change career. The intermediate diploma is a technical certificate which will give you the underpinning knowledge required to develop a wide range of skills necessary for progression onto the C&G or EAL Level 3 Advanced Diploma in Electrical Installation.

On successful completion this qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to further progress your learning within the electrical industry, such as the level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installations or an Electrotechnical Apprenticeship.

How will this course be delivered?

This qualification is for learners wanting to extend their knowledge, skills and behaviours associated with Electrical and develop their abilities to become successful as an Electrician.

Our qualifications can lead directly into employment, offering learners the chance to develop their skills and knowledge to a high standard recognised by the industry. Learners may also progress from the Level 2 qualifications straight through to Level 3 or on to an Apprenticeship.

What qualifications will I get?

City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Electrical Installations (Buildings and Structures) (2365-02)

How will I be assessed?

There are 5 mandatory units to complete within the qualification - Each of the 5 units has a Knowledge Assessment that is multiple choice on-line assessment. This assesses the learner's underpinning knowledge of the topics in each unit.

Practical Training tasks are completed weekly to prepare learners to undertake the Practical synoptical assessment at the end of the year. Each of the practical assessments is graded by the tutor/assessor.

How do I get a place on the course?

Complete the college application form and undertake an interview where you will also need to provide a reference.

What are the entry requirements?

You will require successful achievement of a Level 1 Diploma in Electrical and minimum of 2 in GCSEs English and Maths grades 9-4 (formerly A*-C).

Alternatively successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification and have achieved a Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths.

What else do I need to know?

You should have an interest in Electrical and be able to work with your hands in a safe manner. You will be required to provide safety boots and appropriate clothing to wear in the workshop, and your own appropriate study equipment. Task Manuals and course materials are supplied by the College, which will need to be completed by you, the candidate.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of the Level 2 you could progress onto an Apprenticeship Standard 3 programme if you are able to secure employment in the Electrical sector.

Learners who have a proven high standard of attendance and demonstrated a positive attitude can be recommended for any apprenticeship opportunities that may arise.

Electrician

Electricians and electrical fitters assemble parts in the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, and install, maintain, and repair electrical plant, machinery, appliances and wiring.

What’s Involved?

An Electrician examines drawings, specifications and wiring diagrams to determine the method and sequence of operations; selects, cuts and lays wires and connects to sockets, plugs or terminals by crimping, soldering, brazing or bolting; cuts, bends and installs electrical conduit; assembles parts and sub-assemblies using hand tools and by brazing, riveting or welding; installs electrical plant, machinery and other electrical fixtures and appliances such as fuse boxes, generators, light sockets etc.; examines electrical plant or machinery, domestic appliances and other electrical assembly for faults using test equipment and replaces worn parts and faulty wiring.
