Where will this course lead?

A hospitality team member can work in a range of establishments, for example bars, restaurants, cafés, conference centres, banqueting venues, hotels or contract caterers. 
The role is very varied and although hospitality team members tend to specialise in an area, they have to be adaptable and ready to support team members across the business, for example during busy periods. Specialist areas in hospitality include food and beverage service, serving alcoholic beverages, barista, food preparation, housekeeping, concierge and guest services, reception, reservations and conference and banqueting. The most important part of the role is developing fantastic hospitality skills and knowledge such as recognising customer needs, knowing how to match them to the products and services of the business and working as part of a team to ensure that every customer, whether they are eating in a restaurant, drinking cocktails in a bar, ordering room service in a hotel or attending a business conference feels welcomed and looked after.

What will I study?

Whilst studying for this qualification you will be developing the knowledge, skills and behaviour that are key to the role.These may include:
- Customer service
- Sales techniques
- Health & safety
- Effective communication skills
- Food safety
- Food & beverage service
- Hospitality law

You will also need to complete a vocational competence evaluation log.
This log book will be evaluated throughout your programme and supports your completion of the end point assessment.

When your employer and the College confirm that you have completed the required studies, you will be entered for an end point assessment which includes:
- Vocational competence discussion
- Hospitality business project
- Multiple choice exam
 

How will this course be delivered?

The apprenticeship programme consists of on-the-job and off-the-job training delivered through college workshops, on-the-job training from your employer, independent study and work-based visits from your assessor.

What qualifications will I get?

Hospitality Team Member Apprenticeship Level 2 with either a Pass or Distinction
Level 1 Functional Skills English*
Level 1 Functional Skills Maths *
Following the completion of Level 1 Functional Skills you are required to work towards and take the end Level 2 test in both English and Maths.

How will I be assessed?

Your progress and development will be assessed at regular stages throughout the apprenticeship - this is likely to be a combination of observations, professional discussions, completed tasks - assignments, reflective accounts, presentations of products of work and witness testimonies.

Your employer and training provider will formally sign off your readiness for the end assessment when you have met and can confidently apply the minimum requirements of skills, knowledge and behaviours as detailed in the apprenticeship standard.

The end point assessment consists of four components and can be taken after a minimum of 12 months on-programme learning.

Multi Choice Question Exam: 90 minutes
Externally set and marked multiple choice test. Scenario based questions. Undertaken either on the employer's premises or off site.

Practical Observation: 2 hours
A pre-planned observation of the apprentice in the working environment. Time may be split to cover preparation and service. Your opportunity to demonstrate appropriate skills, knowledge and behaviours in your specialist function

Business Project:
A project to look at an opportunity/challenge/idea to make an improvement to the business. This will be researched and then presented to employer and independent end point assessor.

Professional Discussion: 40 minutes
A structured discussion enabling you to demonstrate your understanding and application of knowledge, skills and behaviours. Led by the independent end assessor, involving the apprentice and employer (e.g. line manager). This is an opportunity for your independent assessor to clarify aspects of the observation, further explore examples of your work, validate judgements on the quality of work and ask questions about your personal development and learner journey.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements.

You must be working a minimum of 30 hours and a maximum of 37 hours a week.

What can I do after this course?

On completion of the apprenticeship, learners will be qualified to work within the hospitality industry with career progression routes into hospitality supervisor roles. The many transferable skills that you will develop during this course provide a superb foundation for most career pathways with an emphasis on delivering excellence.
