Where will this course lead?

This Pearson vocational course offers an exciting and hands on learning experience which prepares you for work in the film and television industries including Drama, Documentary, Content Creation, Multi-Camera TV Production and Live Broadcasting. The course begins at level 4 where you will develop strong foundational skills in single camera production and multi-camera TV broadcasting. Multi-skilled practitioners are highly sought after and, you will work in a variety of roles from concept design and scriptwriting to cinematography and editing.

What will I study?

Level 4 - Module A Process and Practice:

A1 Concept and Development

A2 Creative Project

During Level 4, you will study contextual and production focused film and television. This includes but is not inclusive of:

  • Introduction to Film and TV Studies
  • Scriptwriting
  • Production and Technical Skills - Introduction to TV Broadcasting, Documentary Production - including cinematography, lighting and sound recording.
  • Post-Production - Audio and Video Editing using Adobe Premiere Pro.
  • Creative Project - Multi-Camera studio TV Production.

How will this course be delivered?

This full-time course is delivered face to face at Stratford-upon Avon College; and students are required to be onsite for 15 hours per week (usually delivered over 3 days). The HNC course is one academic year.

What qualifications will I get?

You will achieve 120 credits on completion of this one-year HNC qualification in Film and Television.

How will I be assessed?

This is a 100% coursework qualification. Practical skills are an essential element of the course and will be developed through independent work, classroom activity and expert demonstration. Peer and tutor feedback will be used to support skills development. Oral and written communication will also be developed through assignments and production work. Assessments include a variety of methods including presentations, reports/essays, digital portfolio, observation of production work. All units must be passed to complete the course.

What are the entry requirements?

Standard offer:

80 UCAS Tarriff Points in a relevant creative subject such as Creative Media Production; Performing Arts, Film, Media and Photography, T-Level in Broadcast Media, Level 3 Apprenticeship in a relevant standard.

Standard offer: 80 UCAS Tariff Points or MMP profile in preferably in a relevant subject

A Levels: BB preferably in a relevant subject

T-Levels: Pass with (C or above on the Core) preferably in a relevant subject

BTEC: MMP/MM preferably in a relevant subject

UCAS Tariff: 80 UCAS Tariff Points preferably in a relevant subject

Access to Higher Education: 60 Credits overall with 45 Credits at level 3 with a minimum of 80 UCAS Tariff Points in a related subject

Level 3 Apprenticeship: Successfully achieve an advanced apprenticeship in a related subject.

GCSE/IGCSE English Language grades 9-4/A*-C or recognised equivalent. GCSE/IGCSE Maths grades 9-4/A*-C or recognised equivalent.

Individual portfolios are not necessary but will be considered from applicants who do not hold the traditional entry criteria.

English Language Requirements

Students who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualifications may be considered as eligible to apply for the programme.

While you will have access to all production equipment, you will be required to purchase the following items before commencing the course:

Budget £100 to cover the costs of the essential equipment.

Please also budget up to £150 to cover the cost of trips which will be an integral part of the course.

If you need to re-take a module due to non-achievement, this will also incur a cost.

What can I do after this course?

On successful completion of the qualification, you might choose to complete a level 5 top-up course to achieve a HND in Film and Television. Students should not assume direct entry to Level 5 is automatic to other universities and should liaise with individual institutions to confirm accreditation of prior learning procedures and direct entry requirements.

The creative industries are thriving across the West Midlands region and progression also includes directly entering employment. Graduates from the HND will have a variety of skills to work as freelance practitioners and you will therefore have the possibility of working with regional companies such as the BBC, Netflix, ITV and Rumpus Media.
