Uniformed Protective Services (UPS) students from Stratford-upon-Avon College learnt the sky is the limit when it comes to a career with the RAF recently as they visited an active base.
Students on the Level 2 and Level 3 UPS course had the opportunity to visit RAF Brize Norton, the largest RAF station in the UK, and hear talks from RAF Regiment, Firefighters, Police, Chefs, Cyber, Physical Training Instructors, Air Crew and Pilots.
Students got to get an up close view of a range of roles available at an RAF base plus a tour of the fire engines!
The students were also excited to welcome Sergeant Andy Chambers and Sergeant Darren Rivers to campus later in the week, who spoke about training routes and roles within the RAF. They then took students through a practical set of exercises in the gym; with a focus on skills such as leadership, communication and followship.

These experiences have been incredibly useful for students and have helped shape their career path choices. Student Josh Everitt commented: “I was originally thinking about pursuing a Civil Police role, but this trip showed other opportunities such as Transportation Security – which I didn’t know about and think I would prefer. The trip has shown me options I didn’t know were there.”
Lucy Clements added: “It was nice to hear about the positives and negatives of the job from people who work in it. It really makes you realise you can see yourself there, doing it. So, it was really beneficial.”
Sergeant Darren Rivers was keen for the students to take away some useful thoughts about their career options: “I hope they have more awareness of what the RAF offers them, both now and in the future as a career.”
