Students from Stratford-upon-Avon College and Solihull College & University Centre recently went head-to-head in a Varsity Sports competition to raise money for UNISEF.
Arranged by the Student Enrichment Team, students from Stratford as well as both Solihull’s Blossomfield and Woodlands campuses took part. Students came from a range of departments including Sport, Animal Welfare, Foundation Learning, Business, Uniformed Protective Services, Early Years & Education, Construction, Science and ESOL.
The event was split into two main competitions, Football and Badminton. Each campus played each other, then the winners played the final. After a tense set of matches, the overall winner was Stratford-upon-Avon College.
Student Engagement Officer, Candice Ford, was delighted with the event and detailed it’s importance: “Events like Varsity are an important part of the college experience for our students. They go beyond just competition, helping to build a strong community, pride, and belonging. Taking part in Varsity gives students the chance to develop confidence and teamwork, while also encouraging them to stay active and engaged, and of course, have fun! It also provides opportunities for students to represent their peers, show leadership, and support one another in a positive environment. Most importantly, events like these bring people together, create memories, and play a key role in making college life more enjoyable and rewarding for everyone involved.”
Personal Progress and Development Coach for Sport, Tyrone May, was proud of the Stratford students win and highlighted the benefits: “Events like this have so many benefits: they support mental health, bring students together from different courses, and are great to add to personal statements. Shout out to Rocco Bayha who captained the side and showed great leadership throughout!”

With the student response being overwhelmingly positive, the hope is to make the Varsity competition an annual event.
