A Supported Intern from Stratford-upon-Avon College has flourished during his Supported Internship working on sheep farms.
Andrew Massey, 23 from Warwick, has been studying on a Supported Internship programme for the last year, working between two different farming sites as he takes his first steps in the farming industry.
Passionate about working on farms and with sheep from a young age, Andrew dedicated lots of time during childhood to gaining work experience. When it came to doing a Supported Internship at the College, Andrew was delighted to find a position which allowed him to follow this passion.
Supported Internships are designed to help young people with learning difficulties or disabilities gain the skills and experience needed for employment. By combining workplace placements with tailored support from job coaches and college staff, the programme enables students to build confidence, develop independence and prepare for successful careers.
One of the farms was Church Farm in Henley-in-Arden, owned and ran by Mark and Kirsty Smith, where Andrew was able to work practically everyday to develop his knowledge first-hand.
He mucked out sheep, helped with worming and vaccinating, took part in the shearing and was dedicated to working hard every day. He comments: “I have learnt so much from Kirsty and Mark, they have helped me get to where I want to be. I really appreciate what they have done for me. They are brilliant!”
Farm Owner Mark has really enjoyed hosting Andrew’s internship: “It has been the first time having a Supported Intern here, which we couldn’t have done if Andrew hadn’t had all the previous experience he did. It has been great having him on the team.”
Andrew has also really appreciated his time at college, which he attended one day a week alongside his practical work to support his learning: “I have felt safe and calm at the College and everyone has been really helpful. The staff have all been really good and have helped me a lot.”
Andrew’s mum, Mandy, has also noticed how beneficial the Supported Internship has been for Andrew: “This is Andrews first experience of a mainstream setting so the fact that he has felt safe and happy is massive and a real tribute to the culture and environment of the College. He has grown in confidence so much in the last 12 months and the Supported Internship has been great in preparing him for his next steps.”
